70 glorious years! Celebrating The Queen's Platinum Jubilee
Jubilees started life as religious celebrations but have become occasions to celebrate the life and reign of a monarch.
In September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II became Britain’s longest reigning royal and is now the first monarch to reach the Platinum Jubilee – an incredible achievement! She acceded to the throne in 1952 - that’s a whopping 70 years as the Queen of England! To get to Platinum (70 years) she has already achieved Silver (25 years), Ruby (40 years), Gold (50 years), Diamond (60 years) and Sapphire (65 years).
Did you know that The London Underground has a line named after the Queen’s Silver Jubilee? It’s aptly named the Jubilee Line! And in celebration of this special year the brand new Elizabeth Line crossing west to east right across Greater London opens this summer.
From her service during World War Two to her charitable giving and love of animals, Queen Elizabeth is a strong, inspiring and powerful woman who sets a benchmark for a future generation of leaders.
Her extraordinary reign has seen her travel extensively – more so than any previous monarchs – with many historic overseas visits. She has toured the Middle East, danced with U.S. presidents, travelled many times to Canada (also part of the Commonwealth) and acquired some interesting gifts on her travels (in 1968 in Brazil she was gifted two sloths! They were placed in a local zoo to be appropriately cared for).
Known for her commitment to a life of duty and service, she has been an important figure for the UK and the Commonwealth during times of change, crisis and celebration throughout her 70 years as reigning queen. And she has been true to her coronation promise: 'I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service.' Queen Elizabeth II definitely ranks high on the list of eatsleepdoodle’s favourite heroines!
During this year’s Jubilee bank holiday (2nd-5th June), celebrations will be taking place all over the UK – from Street parties, dinners with friends and family, to meals out and BBQs to celebrate this incredible accomplishment.
